Florilegium is an ode to the captivating beauty found within the plant and floral realm. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant flora inhabiting the diverse landscape of the 4.5 acres in rural Troutdale, Oregon that I call home, this body of work melds a contemporary approach with a nod to the cherished traditions of Florilegium and Victorian Floriography. Through a blend of collaged vintage ephemera, illustration, photography, and mixed media encaustic techniques incorporating rich layers of wax, delicate gold leaf, and semi-precious stones, these artworks endeavor to illuminate not only the inherent allure of nature but also the pressing need to appreciate and preserve its invaluable biodiversity.
The term "florilegium" has its roots in Latin and was used in the Middle Ages to refer to a collection of literary or botanical works, typically focused on flowers or plants.
This series extends beyond mere aesthetic pleasure, seeking to impart a profound message regarding the importance of flora and biodiversity in our world. As viewers delve into the intricate layers of the artwork, they discover hidden narratives and symbolism. I depict flora from my land in the style of Victorian botanical illustrations to pay homage to the historical tradition of Florilegium. I employ contemporary encaustic techniques that add tactile and three-dimensional qualities to enliven the historical elements. My inclusion of gold leaf and semi-precious stones signifies the inherent value and preciousness of nature, reminding us of its irreplaceable role in sustaining life and inspiring awe. Through this interplay of materials and techniques, the pieces evoke a sense of timelessness while remaining firmly rooted in the present, engaging the viewer in a dialogue between past and present artistic expressions.
At the heart of Florilegium is the urgent call to safeguard our planet's biodiversity. Through the meticulous portrayal of various plant species, each artwork becomes a microcosm of ecological harmony, urging viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of all living beings. By immersing ourselves in the breathtaking intricacies of the natural world, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for its fragility and a heightened sense of responsibility to protect and preserve it for generations to come.
